Why Does a Custom Cake Take So Much Time? (Hint: It’s Not Just Flour and Frosting!)

Ever wondered why a custom cake takes so long? You’re not alone! Making a custom cake is like creating a tiny edible masterpiece, and it has to taste amazing too.

It All Starts with Planning and Patience

Before we even measure any ingredients, we chat about flavors, colors, themes, sizes, and all the special details that make your cake unique. Whether it’s for a first birthday, wedding, baby shower, or just because (which we totally support), every design starts with a vision and the talent and knowledge of our cake experts. Also, people are not well versed about the intricacies of cake making. We take the time to educate our clients and give them the very best in customer service. This kind of greatness takes time!

Baking Isn’t the Time-Consuming Part

Believe it or not, baking the cake is often the quickest part! Once the layers are baked, they need to cool completely. We have to make custom fillings and giant batches of scratch made butter cream. The cake is in and out of the oven, the pan, the refrigerator…it all adds up. Plus, frosting a warm cake is like trying to put makeup on after a marathon, t just doesn’t end well.

The Decorating Magic

This is where the hours (and the physical toll) really add up.

Hand-piping details, stacking layers, creating flowers, applying fondant, painting accents, adding toppers, and making sure everything looks just right takes patience and precision. Sometimes a cake that looks “simple” can require several hours of decorating time. Not to mention, we are popular. Our cake experts get interrupted during decorating the masterpiece in front of them to design other clients cakes, decorate grab and go cakes for last minute purchases, learn trending design techniques and, believe it or not, they even like to take bathroom breaks and eat lunch. Human beings are just so extra, aren’t we?

There’s a Little Bit of Stress Involved

Cake decorators spend a surprising amount of time thinking things like:

  • “Please don’t pick up the box from the sides!”
  • “They’re going to slice this beauty and all my work is eventually going down the toilet…literally!”
  • “Why did I think 100 tiny, mulit color flowers were a good idea?”
  • “My hands hurt almost as much as my shoulders and back.”
  • “I don’t get paid nearly enough for this.”

Every Cake Is Made Just for You

Unlike grabbing a dessert off a grocery store shelf, custom cakes are made one at a time exclusively for each individual person. No assembly lines. No shortcuts. Just lots of butter, creativity, and probably a playlist keeping us company while we work. (Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age if you want to keep Monica happy.)

So How Much Time Goes Into a Cake?

The time it takes to create a custom cake can vary quite a bit, depending on the design. It might take anywhere from a few hours to several days to bring it all together. From planning and baking to cooling, filling, decorating, and adding the final touches, there’s a lot of work that goes into making a custom cake. Also, a lot of very quiet cursing.

And really? That’s what makes them so special. Not the cursing, the other stuff.

Because the most important moments in life deserve more than just assembly line made dessert—they deserve something that’s made with love, intention, imagination, and maybe just a sprinkle of fairy glitter everywhere.
